Fumbling: A Journey of Love, Adventure, and Renewal on the Camino de Santiago ReviewI read this book several years ago and I constantly think of it and recommend it. Kerry Egan literally details her spiritual journey as she and her fiance take a pilgrimage in Spain. After reading it, I immediately wanted to walk 500 miles and I began to think about her ideas on faith and devotion. It was so enlightening to read about a divinity student, a person one may imagine to have strong faith, to be just as questioning and doubting as the rest of us.Fumbling: A Journey of Love, Adventure, and Renewal on the Camino de Santiago Overview

With God On Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America ReviewThis book is pretty solid in documenting the history of the religious right in America. Although much of the focus is on the last half of the 20th century, the introduction and the epilogue give some background on the interaction between Christianity and government in the previous period.
I haven't seen the PBS television series that this book accompanies, so some things in the book probably impact a little differently than seeing video or audio accounts, especially so in a movement that makes so much use of oral speeches and broadcasts. But at least in the written account, the balance is kept between fair treatment and criticism of the different elements of the movement. This is no easy feat, given the sometimes inflammatory rhetoric both by the Christian right and against it.
The chapters of the book appear to reflect an episode format, with varying types of focal points telling the story in a roughly chronological order. One chapter profiles a person (--Billy Graham) while other chapters highlight in depth a local conflict (such as the battle over sex education in Anaheim and the school book battle in West Virginia), while others talk primarily about the formation of the major activist groups (Moral Majority, and then later the Christian Coalition). One trend appears to be that as the Judeo-Christian culture lost its monopoly in the political process, the struggle has been for the Christian right (in whatever form it took at the time) to keep its place at the table while keeping to its core values. Even at the end of the book (which ends with mid-1996), this conflict was not resolved.
The book also focuses on personal profiles of the individuals in the involvement, which also provides some more depth about what many people might lump together as monolithic. The differences between Jerry Falwell's background (the rural son of an alcoholic father) and Pat Robertson (the son of a U.S. senator) are pointed out in light of the interaction (or lack thereof) at certain points when they would be considered natural allies on the surface. And at a time in the 1980s when most Christian preachers and conservative commentators were considering the possibility of quarantining or tatooing AIDS patients, one televangelist said:
"How sad that we as Christians, who ought to be the salt of the earth, and we, who are supposed to be able to love everyone, are afraid so of an AIDS patient that we will not go up and put our arm around them and tell them that we care."
The televangelist? Tammy Faye Bakker.
For those seeking to learn about the movement without the whitewash or the ridicule that accompanies most assessments of the Christian right, this book is the best place to start. With God On Our Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America Overview

Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War ReviewAs a progressive who grew up in exactly the kind of town the author describes, I found "Deer Hunting With Jesus" to be a chilling and dead on accurate account of modern day America. Unless you've had the experience of seeing the house you grew up in only 20 years ago boarded up and sold at a HUD auction, or turned into a crack house as my best friend from high school's house recently was (we were solidly middle class by small town standards), you really can't appreciate what the author is trying to describe.
That said, this is no biased political rant, as the author's staunch defense of gun ownership demonstrates. It is instead a desperate warning to all Americans just how perilously close we are to seeing our way of life destroyed by our own misguided collective actions. The author believes that progressives and the white working class (rednecks as he calls them) ought to be able to find political common ground based upon economic interest. He's also realistic enough to realize that it is unlikely to happen in time to rescue America from the precipice we seemed so determined to fling ourselves over.
Be forewarned, it is depressing as hell and in no way conforms to the Republican OR Democratic narratives of what America needs to do to preserve our way of life. It is the kind of truth-telling book that could only be written by someone who has seen enough of living on both sides of the red-blue divide to truly understand what ails this country.
In all, a perfect antidote to what the author calls the "American Hologram" of our mass media culture.Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class War Overview

Saved by Beauty: Adventures of an American Romantic in Iran ReviewIn this book, poetry surges from every encounter, every place, every description and the reader can feel Roger Housden's attunement with Iran in a passionate way. Beauty indeed! And Rumi whispers all along in the midst of the most enchanting places as well as in the sobering reality of the political control that lingers at every step. I love this book!Saved by Beauty: Adventures of an American Romantic in Iran Overview

The Shiksa Syndrome: A Novel ReviewThere is first and foremost a major flaw in the book and it is that the reader is expected to believe that Aimee, a for the most part, intelligent, career woman who prides herself on being a Jewish woman is just fine with the fact that Josh is self-prejudiced against Jews, and in particular thinks quite poorly of Jewish women. Now as the reader, I don't like this man and now I don't like the main character Aimee and I think if she is this foolish I don't care what happens to her. That is never a good sign when the main characters of the book are totally unlikeable.
I also had problems with some of the choices made in the writing particularly with transitions within chapters. Some of them were so disjointed, several times I had to look to see if the pages were stuck together and I missed something. Also, the fact that the parents were referred to as both Aimee's mother or father and then to their first names, sometimes in the same paragraph was awkward almost as if each was two different people. Very confusing. Then what is with the cover photo choice? Quite a few times in the book it is stated that Aimee transformed into a redhead. Why oh why did they make the girl on the cover very clearly a blond? If the publishing company wanted Aimee to be a blond just change it in the text. This book was not even particularly well-written. I'm really not clear what anyone saw in this book. It was a great idea, in theory, for a book but I think the major misstep was making Josh so prejudiced against Jewish women. I think that it would have been better to play up his attraction to the Shiksa without making him not like Jews or being Jewish, as a whole. The Shiksa Syndrome: A Novel Overview

"The Golden Age Of Custom Album Packaging" 1970 to 1984 - The Story Behind The Jesus Christ Superstar Album ReviewErnie, you're Jesus Christ Superstar story was really interesting and kept me wanting to read on. You whet my appetite; and I found myself dying for more. You're story has hit close to my heart and I felt that I was right there with you every step of the way. You're talent as an artist is a no-brainer, but for you to take you're artistic talents and put such a colorful spin on it through you're story. It truly demonstrates what a gifted individual you truly are.
I am a huge fan of the opera and have also seen it performed in other countries and in many languages. I have always found it to be one of those fascinating stories, just like yours Ernie! A story where outwardly incompatible people come together at the right place and time, and take a chance on each other in order to achieve something so great.
As it turned out, Jesus Christ Superstar became a cultural phenomenon, and it must have been a real kick to have played a part in making that happen. I would also like to thank you for sharing, the most beautiful written autobiography, of you're accomplishments. The article is done in great taste, with color and documentation that certainly catches one's attention.
During my 35 years of experiencing life, my highest highs have almost always come from collaborations, be they with knowledgeable clients or co-workers. Visiting Ernie's own album cover site website: [...] it's quite obvious he not only understands working with others, but he has a remarkable eye for spotting exceptional talent to work with.
My advice too all would be, to check out the story if you haven't already -- it's an incredible adventure and a refreshing treat... that I will read again and again.
Can't wait for the next installment."The Golden Age Of Custom Album Packaging" 1970 to 1984 - The Story Behind The Jesus Christ Superstar Album OverviewIn the beginning' is where my story begins so it's the perfect place to start. The Jesus Christ Superstar album was my first cover that had major notoriety and such huge global success right from the start. The only other album cover that I had done before Superstar was part of a promotion that I created for International Paper Corporation, which led me to creating two of the most iconic images in Rock N' Roll history, but that's a whole other story.Toward the end of 1969 I was a designer at Carloni Advertising in Manhattan my first gig in the “Big Apple", after graduating from California College of Arts & Crafts, in Oakland CA. One of my first assignments was to create a campaign and all the graphics for International Paper Company's National Sales Meeting, introducing all their new paper stocks for 1970. I created an Off-Broadway musical presentation fashioned after the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. complete with 10 original songs, skits and a chorus line of beautiful dancing girls. Our production was at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. It was called “Dolls Alive." The promotion I created had an element to it that was an octagon album cover and record. They had recorded the production songs and pressed an album as a take home memento of the show. The campaign received a lot of notoriety and was displayed in the Union Carbine Building uptown for a few months. During that time a very aggressive “Graphic Design Headhunter" whose office was in the building, saw the campaign, got my name, and reached out to me.

The Night Counter: A Novel ReviewScheherazade could learn a thing or two about storytelling from Alia Yunis, who uses the 1001 Nights conceit to tell the tale of Fatima Abdullah, an 85-year-old matriarch who trades beauty tips with Scheherazade as she counts down the nights she thinks she has left to live. Both Fatima and Scheherazade display a lot of L.A. lip, which is not surprising given that Yunis is a filmmaker from L.A. Fatima, a purple-haired Detroit Tigers fan, is a character hard to beat, but she gets competition from her highly dysfunctional family. How glad I was that I didn't have to wait 1001 nights to hear all their stories. But The Night Counter is more than a collection of wonderfully zany characters. It's also a cautionary tale about how living in the past can keep you from living in the present and how little families understand each other.

Escape ReviewEscape is undoubtedly one of the most bizarre memoirs you are ever likely to read. It is small wonder that it quickly made its mark on the New York Times list of bestsellers. Written by Carolyn Jessop, a woman who was born into the Fundamentalist Lattery Day Saints (FLDS), the book describes what it is like to live as part of this cult which is distinctive primarily for its beliefs about polygamy. The FLDS, which emerged in the 1930s as a fundamentalist offshoot of the Mormon church, holds that God has ordained polygamy and not only that, but that it is a requirement for anyone who wishes to attain the highest level of heaven. Most men eventually have at least three wives, with more prominent members of the cult holding far more than that. Some of the leaders are believed to have fifty, sixty, or even one hundred wives. Women are generally placed with husbands at the whim of the cult's leader (who claims to receive divine guidance about which women belong with certain men). There are around 10,000 adherents to this cult living in the United States today.
Jessop was born into a family that eventually had two wives but one that, compared to others in the community, seemed almost normal. When she was just eighteen, though, she was assigned to become the fourth wife of a fifty-five year old man. While she was married to him he added two more wives and later went on to add five or six more. Through fifteen years of marriage, Jessop gave birth to eight children. Through her marriage she suffered constant abuse at the hands of her husband, his other wives, and other members of the community. Though for much of her life she believed the claims of the FLDS religion, she eventually began to see through its hypocrisy and decided that, for the good of herself and her children, she would need to escape from it.
Escape from FLDS is not easy. Their tight-knit communities have immense power and wealth. Even the local police officers are members of the cult and will not support a wife who seeks to emancipate herself or her family. Until Jessop, no woman had managed to escape the clutches of the cult with all of her children. Jessop, though, ran from the cult and fought against it in the courts, eventually winning full custody of her eight children. This was no small victory. In fact, it was worth telling in a book.
While the book is a definite page-turner (as both my wife and I can attest) it is not always easy to read. The descriptions of life in the FLDS are at times horrific. There were several areas that I found particularly interesting.
Jessop is frank (though not vulgar or graphic) in her discussions about sexuality within her plural marriage and well she needs to be, for sex plays a strange but crucial role in these marriages. Though the women generally hate their husbands, they still want to have sex with him--not for the sake of love or intimacy, but because sex is power. The wife who gains sexual favor with her husband is the wife who can use him to further her own desires. Often these desires pit her against the other wives. It is an odd situation where wives who hate their husband seek to have sex (which they hate) with their husband (whom they hate) so they can further their hate-filled plans towards each other. So much, then, for the idealized content of "sister wives" that the cult seeks to portray to the world.
This book and its description of life within plural marriage shows that marriage--marriage as given to us in the Bible--serves as protection for women. When people ignore biblically-ordained marriage, women immediately lose the protection it affords. They quickly become subservient to men. The women always lose out.
Perhaps the most shocking thing to remember while reading the book is that it takes place in twenty-first century America. This is not fundamentalist Islam in the Middle East; this is not the earliest days of Mormonism. This is happening in the very heart of America--women are treated like cattle, used to breed children and bought, sold and traded like so many goods. In America. It is almost unbelievable.
While the FLDS is hardly an accurate representation of average religion and bears little resemblance to Christianity or even to Mormonism, this portrayal is increasingly what people think of when they think about religion. More and more people are becoming convinced that all religion tends towards extremism and a book like this may just fuel those fires. This story is awful to read, but it is written well and is for some reason quite fascinating.Escape Overview

Ideas And Opinions Review"Ideas and Opinions" reveals much about the thought processes, culture, and observations that shaped the character of Albert Einstein. In a remarkable series of insightful short prose selections, the reader learns a great deal about Einstein's views on morality and ethics; religion, particularly Judaism; government; the arts, literature, and higher education; philosophy; and government. His personal letters to and observations about other key persons of his time including Shaw, Freud, Gandhi, and Lorentz illustrate what a fully integrated individual Einstein truly was, a view that may counter some of the extreme depictions that render him a genius incapable of focusing beyond his science.
Having some many thoughts from this astounding intellect pulled into one volume makes this book a worthwhile addition to the stack of rainy day books. It's a book to be consumed in fits and starts, with a cup of coffee on the screened porch in the rain, a treat for inquiring minds.
The prose, perhaps a tad stilted by modern standards, is lucid. And seeing Einstein turn his attention on the topic everyone wrangles with forges a new link to him and his work. As he stated, " The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking."Ideas And Opinions Overview
