Fumbling: A Journey of Love, Adventure, and Renewal on the Camino de Santiago ReviewI read this book several years ago and I constantly think of it and recommend it. Kerry Egan literally details her spiritual journey as she and her fiance take a pilgrimage in Spain. After reading it, I immediately wanted to walk 500 miles and I began to think about her ideas on faith and devotion. It was so enlightening to read about a divinity student, a person one may imagine to have strong faith, to be just as questioning and doubting as the rest of us.Fumbling: A Journey of Love, Adventure, and Renewal on the Camino de Santiago Overview

Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World ReviewGelman's book, "Tales of a Female Nomad," is a testament to the human spirit, courage, and to our basic need to connect with others. It is a very personal account of her life as she goes through a divorce and discovers her individual self, without her husband, and through her numerous adventures. She goes to many places: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Israel, Galapagos Islands, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada, and Thailand. What surprises me about Gelman's style is her very personal approach. She reveals intimate details, especially about fears and insecurities, which made me I more and more drawn to her story. It is though she is inviting the reader to be a friend and to share her experiences. She travels unconventionally - without much of a plan and not just to capital cities. Her stories of the people she has met warms the heart and reveals a beautiful humanity that is shared among all cultures.
This book is wonderful for anyone, but I strongly recommend it to women all ages and walks of life. Shows how one can live their dream and take the road not taken.Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World Overview

Female Nomad and Friends: Tales of Breaking Free and Breaking Bread Around the World ReviewConnection is the self-proclaimed theme of Rita Golden Gelman's life. She hearkens back to a time of yore by calling herself a modern-day nomad. In Female Nomad and Friends, she is in hunter-gather mode collecting recipes from around the globe via submissions to her website. They are meticulously blended with real-life stories of 41 women who take a leap of faith and reach out to another human being - whether across town or across the world. Every hint of zest is appreciated and recognized in this culinary community of over 25 ethnic dishes.
Golden Gelman upped the ante even further by donating all of the proceeds of the book to a scholarship fund. It will enable high school graduates in the slums of India to attend vocational schools. The funds are being administered through a Maryland chapter of the Rotary Club. With a soul full of wanderlust, she may not have a permanent address, but Golden Gelman certainly does not equate the absence of hearth and home with a lack of responsibility.
The book is divided into five sections: Connecting, Mixed Messages, Language, Passion and Food. The recipes range from the familiar - Grandma's fried chicken - to the exotic - sun-dried worms. However, the downright peculiar are thankfully omitted (Filipino head of the dog, anyone?).
Among the accompanying stories, there are several stand-outs. One woman experiences the ultimate in hospitality when an elderly woman offers to carry her on her back across a flooded Vietnamese street. Another answers a want ad for a housekeeper and discovers a lonely Alaskan looking for a wife. A Swedish exchange student experiences her first Thanksgiving, Texas-style. An American schoolteacher in France is invited to the sumptuous table of her student's family. An orphaned Iraqi girl makes a connection with an American woman before and after the 2003 invasion. A visiting couple who miss their ferry stop are rowed upstream against the current by a kind native in Paraguay.
However, many dangers exist for women traveling alone, and these perils are not ignored. One woman is raped by a hotel manager in India and later returns home to discover that she is pregnant. Another drinks the water on a South Pacific island and succumbs to dysentery.

All Over the Map ReviewI ordered this having read "An Italian Affair." I was really impressed with the author's honesty about some topics that women aren't typically very forthcoming about (loneliness, relationship troubles, over 40 and single) and some other tough topics I won't reveal, so readers have the chance to find out themselves about some of her struggles.
She points out early on (and she's right) that her earlier book, "Italian Affair" came out way before Eat, Pray, Love, and actually is very similar in some ways. But the national craze didn't follow her story.
Like that book, there is a fair amount of self-absorption here. But that's not a negative. It's her story, and hence, she's absorbed in telling us and revealing to us what makes her tick.
I'm a happily married wife and mother who found much of what she had to say very fresh and honest. I admire her for that because our lives are very different, but she gave me a real window into hers.
I think it would make an interesting book club book for women in all kinds of situations and at various points in their lives.
