"The Golden Age Of Custom Album Packaging" 1970 to 1984 - The Story Behind The Jesus Christ Superstar Album ReviewErnie, you're Jesus Christ Superstar story was really interesting and kept me wanting to read on. You whet my appetite; and I found myself dying for more. You're story has hit close to my heart and I felt that I was right there with you every step of the way. You're talent as an artist is a no-brainer, but for you to take you're artistic talents and put such a colorful spin on it through you're story. It truly demonstrates what a gifted individual you truly are.
I am a huge fan of the opera and have also seen it performed in other countries and in many languages. I have always found it to be one of those fascinating stories, just like yours Ernie! A story where outwardly incompatible people come together at the right place and time, and take a chance on each other in order to achieve something so great.
As it turned out, Jesus Christ Superstar became a cultural phenomenon, and it must have been a real kick to have played a part in making that happen. I would also like to thank you for sharing, the most beautiful written autobiography, of you're accomplishments. The article is done in great taste, with color and documentation that certainly catches one's attention.
During my 35 years of experiencing life, my highest highs have almost always come from collaborations, be they with knowledgeable clients or co-workers. Visiting Ernie's own album cover site website: [...] it's quite obvious he not only understands working with others, but he has a remarkable eye for spotting exceptional talent to work with.
My advice too all would be, to check out the story if you haven't already -- it's an incredible adventure and a refreshing treat... that I will read again and again.
Can't wait for the next installment."The Golden Age Of Custom Album Packaging" 1970 to 1984 - The Story Behind The Jesus Christ Superstar Album OverviewIn the beginning' is where my story begins so it's the perfect place to start. The Jesus Christ Superstar album was my first cover that had major notoriety and such huge global success right from the start. The only other album cover that I had done before Superstar was part of a promotion that I created for International Paper Corporation, which led me to creating two of the most iconic images in Rock N' Roll history, but that's a whole other story.Toward the end of 1969 I was a designer at Carloni Advertising in Manhattan my first gig in the “Big Apple", after graduating from California College of Arts & Crafts, in Oakland CA. One of my first assignments was to create a campaign and all the graphics for International Paper Company's National Sales Meeting, introducing all their new paper stocks for 1970. I created an Off-Broadway musical presentation fashioned after the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. complete with 10 original songs, skits and a chorus line of beautiful dancing girls. Our production was at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. It was called “Dolls Alive." The promotion I created had an element to it that was an octagon album cover and record. They had recorded the production songs and pressed an album as a take home memento of the show. The campaign received a lot of notoriety and was displayed in the Union Carbine Building uptown for a few months. During that time a very aggressive “Graphic Design Headhunter" whose office was in the building, saw the campaign, got my name, and reached out to me.
