The Little Mermaid: From the Deep Blue Sea to the Great White Way ReviewThis colorful book is a treasure. Part Broadway program, part coffee-table book, part fairy tale history, it's for fans of both the Hans Christian Andersen tale as well as Disney's spunky 1989 animated film, which of course has recently become an award-winning Broadway show. It's also a fascinating primer in how a Broadway show is put together.
The focus is on the Broadway show. Writer Michael Lassell includes interviews with director Francesca Zambello, choreographer Steven Mear, writer Doug Wright, composer Alan Menken, designers George Tsypin and Tanya Noginova, lyricist Glenn Slater and Sierra Boggess, who plays Ariel onstage. The book is lavishly illustrated with photos showing not only the Broadway show itself but the backstage sets, rehearsals, costumes, wig makers, storage rooms and models. There are also scores of examples of concept art and sketches, scale drawings and historical illustrations.
A page called "Eels on Wheels" is devoted to the special shoes used by performers that allow them to glide across the stage, emulating swimming. Another spread called "Tentacle Rehearsal" details the laborious routine used to get villain Ursula's octopus tentacles to move properly onstage.
I loved a section called "Songs." Each tune in the show gets a full page. In "Under the Sea," a photo of Ariel shimmying with her underwater friends is accompanied by the lyrics "Just look at the world around you, right here on the ocean floor, such wonderful things surround you, what more is you lookin' for?"
The hardback book has a padded cover.

Spring Awakening ReviewI couldn't put it down when I first recieved it. Spring Awakening, is an amazing adapation of Wedekind's, Spring's Awakening first written in 1899. I own the original by Wedekind, and really appreciated how Steven Sater was able to maintain the integrity of the original while adapting it to a new libretto. When I read the lyrics of the songs in context to the story, I am nothin short of amazed. My recommendation is to read the script, and utilize the soundtrack at the appropriate times. It really enhances the experience. This book and play alone is magnificent, but coupled with the music of Duncan Shiek it is a masterpiece.Spring Awakening Overview

She Loves Me-Vocal Selections: Broadway Revival Edition ReviewI bought this book recently when I had to perform 'A Trip to the Library' as an audition. I quickly fell in love with this musical, written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick who also did 'Fiddler on the Roof'! The story is great- There is a Parfumerie where many people work, specifically Amalia and Georg. They bicker all the time, before they realize that they are eachother's secret correspondent. The plot is slightly confusing, and there are several subplots as well. This just makes 'She Loves Me' all the more...lovable! Songs in this book are: Days Gone By, Dear Friend, Grand Knowing You, Ilona, She Loves Me, Tonight at Eight, A Trip to the Library, Vanilla Ice Cream, and Will He Like Me? And, make no mistake, Cy Feuer and partner Ernest Martin were THE musical producers of that era! Guys & Dolls, How to Succeed...; Can-Can, The Boyfriend! To anyone "of a certain age", these were the musicals of their lives. Sure, there are some factual errors (he confuses Victor Young with Vincent Youmans, for example), but I blame that on co-author Ken Gross. I don't know that it's his fault, mind, I just want to blame him and just revel in Cy Feuer! Avenue Q: The Musical: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Broadway Musical (Applause Books) (Applause Libretto Library) ReviewThis score, from "Avenue Q", a show described as a combination of "South Park" and Sesame Street", is truly excellent. Be warned--the performers on the CD and in the show may make it seem simple, but some of the songs are hard to play. Believe it or not.

This reduction for voice/piano/guitar is pretty good---it would have been better if they had used an arrangement for vocal line with piano accompaniment. Incorparating the vocal line into the accompaniment works for some of the songs, but the quality of most of the songs is hurt by it. Nonetheless, this score is very playable (although sometimes hard to play) and contains many great songs for recreational use or performances and auditions.

This book contains every song from the show and not one note has been cut (although not all dialouge said in the songs is included). The certain gem of the score is "There's a fine, fine line" the "folk rock" ballad that ends the first act. Simple and melodic, it certainly steals the show. "If you were gay," "Purpose," the "Manilowesque---"Fantasies Come True," and "The More you Ruv someone" are all uniquely composed with a different style in mind. Also very melodic and enjoyable. The upbeat and very similar "It Sucks to Be Me," "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," and "For Now" are also delightful highlights.

Hilarious, witty songs are contained in this collection. You would be wise to purchase the CD for inspiration on how to perform these songs, if you haven't already. The Secret Garden - Easy Piano (Broadway's Best) ReviewThis has been one of my favorite musicals since when I first sw it in 1991. It tells the classic story of the beloved novel by the same name. The music is lovely and the whole thing has a mysterious air to it, something never really done in a Secret Garden movie or musical before. I like it. All the lyrics are wonderful and the songs have a wonderful tune too. It is neat to be able to read all the lyrics and all the spoken words. The original cast recording of this musical has some of the spoken words, but not near all of them. It is a nice way to re-live the experience. I highly reccomend this book. Guys and Dolls: Vocal Selections (A Musical Fable of Broadway Based on Characters by Damon Runyon) ReviewI found this songbook to be most unimpressive as far as faithful recreations of the songs and only worthwhile to get if there's no alternative. Not only are the arrangements not true to the original harmonies, but whole verses and introductions are left out, and the keys are drastically changed (sosmetimes as much as a fourth lower), which gives the wrong impressions as to the how the song should sound, and the type of voice suited to the song. According to the keys in this songbook, the role of Sarah Brown was sung by an alto when in reality it's a soprano role. Also, I question the leaving out of "Marry the Man Today", one of the best songs in the show. Hairspray: The Complete Book and Lyrics of the Hit Broadway Musical (Book & Lyrics) ReviewHairspray can only be described as a big HUGE bubble of joy that pops off of the stage and into your lap. It is so fun, bright, colorful, and exciting that I can't help but giggle with delight when I think about it. To answer the previous poster's question, this is the complete libretto; that means it has the book (script) and song lyrics. It also includes cute and colorful pictures of the Original Broadway Cast.
Hairspray is love. If you love Hairspray, you'll love to own and re-enact it every day with your very own script. If you haven't seen Hairspray (you poor thing!) you can read the script and enjoy it just as much as I do! It's super duper funny, hip, and has a lot of heart.
