Hollywood Musicals Year by Year: Third Edition (Applause Books) ReviewFor all who love Hollywood musicals, this updated edition of Stanley Green's thoroughly researched textbook will come as a real godsend. Admittedly, not every musical Hollywood ever produced is covered -- that would take a book ten times this size -- but just about all the really notable productions are included. For 1969, for instance, "Sweet Charity", "Goodbye, Mr Chips", "Paint Your Wagon", "Hello, Dolly!" and "Darling Lili" are musts -- and they are here. It's also particularly good to see under-rated musicals like "Goodbye, Mr Chips", "Where's Charley?" HOLLYWOOD MOVIE MUSICALS ReviewThis is the sixteenth volume in a series of books under the general heading of "Hollywood Classics". I previously did a review for Reid's A Guide To The Best In Cinema Thrills
This one looks at the `great, good and glamorous' Hollywood movie musicals.
Over 140 musicals are covered, with listings of cast and crew, songs, and other credits; a synopsis, interesting notes, a viewer's guide to audience appropriateness, the author's personal comments on the movie, and other views by previous reviewers.
From 1930's Check And Double-Check to 1973's animated Robin Hood, there's a movie here for almost every taste and age.
Reid is very frank in his comments about the movies. If he likes it, he says so: "A brilliant script by Ben Hecht. A Western, would you believe? But what an inventive Western it is! Full of highly original incidents, plenty of action and color. The cast is magnificent. And it's all so masterfully directed by Jack Conway, one of my personal favorites". (Song Of The Plain)
By the same token, if he doesn't like it, he tells you that, also: "I know that Ed Wood is universally famed as the world's worst director, but I disagree. I'd like to nominate George P Quigley. On the evidence of this movie, Mr Quigley easily outdistances Mr Wood." (Murder With Music)
You'll have to read this fascinating book to find out why the author feels this way.

The Sound of Music Companion ReviewLawrence Maslon should be thanked and congratulated for offering a concise and informative Sound of Music book. Although there have been a few Sound of Music books written in the past, this book is probably the first of its kind to tell the story in a concise manner. The Hirsch book on the film and the reissued Max Wilk book on the stage show were great books in their own right, but I think this book tops them all.
Although the numerous photos are the draw of this coffee-table book, a coffee-table book should offer much more than pretty photographs. For this it certainly delivers. His meticulously researched, well-written text tells us the whole Sound of Music story from Maria's birth to the first Austrian stage production in 2005. This book covers all important stops in the history of SOM up till now, and does not dwell too long on any one time period. An added treat is the inclusion of song lyrics and commentaries on the songs, explaining how they were written and what role they played in the musical. I admit there are a few typo errors in the text, but this well-researched book is jam-packed with facts of the musical. You could literally dip your teeth into it and come out a Sound of Music junkie. I do wish there were also lyrics and commentaries for I Have Confidence, So Long, Farewell and also The Lonely Goatherd.
In short, a really great Sound of Music book that makes a splendidd addition to any Sound of Music collection, except that the print tends to be a little too small for the size of the book. Otherwise, a really wonderful book from cover to cover, and a seminal work in the entire world of this well-loved musical. I think this is a book that deserves to be in print forever.The Sound of Music Companion Overview
