The Sound of Music: The Making of America's Favorite Movie ReviewI was 17 the first time I saw SOM in 1965 and I still get a thrill everytime the camera pans to Maria and she starts singing. Having seen the movie countless times I was excited to get this book! I thought at first that knowing about how the film was made would take away some of the magic. However this has not been the case. Informative ( would you believe Gene Kelly turned down being the director!) and the names of some of the actors who were considered for parts will really surprise you. If you are a die hard SOM fan then the price of this book is well worth every penny. Not a fan? Buy it anyway, a good read on how a film is made and how success can be measured not only by the money a movie can make, but by the hearts it touches as well!The Sound of Music: The Making of America's Favorite Movie Overview

The Megamusical (Profiles in Popular Music) ReviewAlthough I've listened to the scores of "Phantom of the Opera," "Cats" and "Les Miserables," I never felt passionately about them. In fact, "Cats" always annoyed me (I'm a dog person myself, and where's the plot?). Author Jessica Sternfeld, however, seems to convey an affection for these large, motif-laden scores in her book "Megamusicals." The book combines Sternfeld's detailed, scholarly examinations of these scores, particularly repeated phrases, pastiches and the use of historical themes, with backgrounds on the conception and production of these shows as well as other megamusicals, including "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Miss Saigon" and "Chess."
Her clear, dynamic prose keeps readers moving through the book, although a few of the denser passages on musical theory are a bit of a slog for non-musicians. (There were a few "oh, yeah" momemnts, however, particularly in her exploration of "Phantom"). I did enjoy reading the narratives on the shows' history, significance and critical reception. Sternfeld is not uniformly approving of what Lloyd Webber and Schonberg did in these musicals, but she does bring out enough depth to make me want to hear them again. I think she does a fine job at defining a subgenre of musical theater, particularly since the genre itself seems to have sunk with "The Pirate Queen." Megamusicals created fantastic worlds through state-of-the-art tech, broad themes and sung-through scores, as Sternfeld and her predecessors, cited at length in the narrative, teach us. You can appreciate the artistry of some of these shows without giving up your allegiance to Sondheim.The Megamusical (Profiles in Popular Music) Overview

Ultimate Sing-Along Female Voice Broadway Divas (Book & CD) (Ultimate Vocal Sing-Along) ReviewI buy a lot of music books with accompaniment CD's because I like to be able to get to know a piece very well before I perform it. I bought this book hoping to learn a few new show tunes, but I was terribly disappointed. It's great if all you want to do is sing karaoke, but it's not good for learning a piece for a performance. There is no piano music, just the lead line, so you can't take the book to your accompanist and have him or her play it for you. Even more problematic is that the accompaniment (music) itself is just awful. If you're used to karaoke, you might be ok with this, but I found the accompaniment to be cheesy. Because I can't listen to the accompaniment (it's so annoying) and because the book doesn't contain the piano accompaniment, I don't think I'm going to use this at all. Show Tunes: The Songs, Shows, and Careers of Broadway's Major Composers ReviewAnyone interested in Broadway lore must own at least three books, all by Steven Suskin. The first is which covers 1943-1964 and the sequel, which deals with 1965-81. These are compilations of what the major New York music critics had to say about the openings of every important show on or just Off-Broadway plus the author's comments about each. These books are very readable and an invaluable document of American musical history. Now Mr. Suskin has given us an equally valuable reference tool, but this is more to be used than to be read for enjoyment.
The third edition of his (Oxford University Press, 2000) is an encyclopedia of facts about the composers of the shows dealt with in the other volumes. The organization is like this. After several introductory pages, we are given facts about the composers of the early years from Jerome Kern to Harold Rome, new composers of the 40s and 50s, and those of the 60s and beyond. Having dealt with what Suskin considers (mostly rightly) to be the major composers, he then devotes the fourth part of the volume to "Notable scores by other composers": "Irene," "Shuffle Along," "Hair," and so on up to "Parade."
Then comes a feature or two, which to students of the American musical like myself, are almost worth the price of the book alone. There is a year by year listing of all the major Broadway productions from 1904-1998, a list of all people who collaborated on the shows (George Abbott, Guy Bolton, etc.), an index of song titles, and finally an index of show titles. Talk about user friendly!
Turning back to the main section and taking Gershwin as an example, Suskin gives us in chronological order facts about each of the shows from 1916 to a 1951 production that used Gershwin's music. For each, he lists all the published songs, indicates which were dropped by opening night, and gives some general comments about the show itself. Then he ends with an evaluation of Gershwin's Broadway output in general.
