Marty's Big Break (Gulliver's Travelers) ReviewHaving read this series in order with having read Gulliver Travels first, I already had preconceived notions about who Marty was and how I was going to enjoy this story. But as I was pleasantly surprised with how I reacted to Book 1, I found myself really enjoying Book 2 - too. Unfortunately for Marty, my thoughts on him didn't change as much for the better like they did with Brayden (of Book 1).
The best part about Book 2 was the reintroduction of some characters from Gulliver Travels that we didn't see in Book 1. I really enjoyed being able to see the OTHER side of Gully's story. While I do think I liked learning about Marty and his story, he's probably my least favorite character in this series. There's a lot to him, and he's not exactly the worst guy in the world (but he's certainly not the best). I like to think of him like that ex boyfriend that you love to hate, because you really put a lot into him (when he just took a lot out of you).Marty's Big Break (Gulliver's Travelers) OverviewThe play's the thing' that Marty Perry can't seem to get himself cast in. Make Believe: The Broadway Musical in the 1920's ReviewEthan Mordden is one of the finest writers working in the area of musical theatre and opera. His insights are not only spot-on but witty and revealing. This book is another welcome addition to his works and to the works written about American musical theatre.
It is difficult to conceive what a fertile time the 1920's was for musicals. Today we consider ourselves very lucky to have more than eight new musicals open on Broadway in a season; back then, it was not uncommon to have more than five times that many. Mordden's skill lies in his ability to delineate the feel of the era, and he is able to dissect, with surgeon-like skill, the strengths and liabilities of each show he discusses.
He not only tackles the well-known shows of the decade ("Sally," "No, No, Nanette," "Good News," "Show Boat") but gives equal attention to the flops as well. Operetta and musical revues such as George White's Scandals or Ziegfeld's Follies are also given plenty of coverage. In fact, I can't think of a major show from this era that Mordden does not cover.
It is clear that Mordden loves and respects his subject. He knows, too, that many of the shows of this time are thin and poorly constructed, but he never sidesteps or apologizes for this material. If you are looking for hard-core facts, this is not the book for you: Mordden is somewhat skimpy in giving particular dates. But if you want an entertaining and comprehensive analysis of a dizzying time in the American theatre, give this book a try.Make Believe: The Broadway Musical in the 1920's Overview

Broadway Nights: A Romp of Life, Love, and Musical Theatre ReviewI was looking for something sparkling and amusing to read, and since I'm a big old theatre nut, I decided to give Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY NIGHTS a go. What a great decision that turned out to be. This novel is brilliantly conceived, fast paced yet beautifully detailed, and a total delight from cover to cover.
Stephen Sheerin in a musical wunderkind, but he's never really reached his potential due to his many hysterical insecurities. He's a superb pianist and a fantastic arranger and conductor but he has issues, lots of issues. He's obsessed with trying to get the attention of his opera diva mother, he's constantly fantasizing about a future with his boyfriend who already has a boyfriend, and he's annoyed by the fact that he's a Broadway sub, always filling in for others but never being the name on the marquee.
Things are about to change, however, when Stephen is offered and accepts the chance to be musical director of a new Broadway show called FLOWERCHILD. Conceived by an old friend of his, Mason, the musical is about the end of the hippie era and uses songs from the period to tell the story.
BROADWAY NIGHTS is actually Stephen's diary. He's writing it because his therapist, Monikah, thinks it will help him deal with his problems. The format allows the reader to follow Stephen's haywire existence on a daily basis, and it's a hoot.
Seth Rudetsky is an extremely successful comedy writer, having received three Emmy nominations for his work on THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW, as well as an accomplished Broadway musician, and it's obvious he knows the world he writes about very well. The book is full of musical theatre anecdotes, and insights, and the feeling of being in on the dirt is palpable.
If you're looking for something to read that's going to help you forget about your own miseries, or if you're just looking for a good book to relax with for an evening, pick up a copy of BROADWAY NIGHTS and slip into Stephen's world for a bit. It's bound to put a smile on your face and a song in your heart.
