A Chronology of American Musical Theater ReviewYou will not find anything as comprehensive and thorough as these three volumes. If you want a definitive chronology of "Broadway" and the American musical, this is your guide. The indexes are easy to use and early information is invaluable. I work on Broadway and can tell you that everyone that comes through our office takes the time to look themselves or their favorite personalities up and are astonished at the breadth of detail. (Also, rumor has it that PLAYBILL magazine uses it as a reference.)
As this is a first edition there are a handful of mistakes, but most of them are easily identifiable, and I am sure that if there is a second edition they will be cleaned up. Also, the omission of the Off-Broadway scene is a shame, but as Mr. Norton explains in the introduction, he had to draw the line somewhere (after all it took him nine years to compile just these three volumes!). Only the first casts, or cast replacements who were the first to perform new songs are listed, so don't expect to find the complete list of everyone who performed in CATS. Also note that this is a chronology of lists and synopses NOT a narrative.
This is vital for any performing arts library, or the true Broadway die-hard. Well worth the price.A Chronology of American Musical Theater Overview

The American Musical and the Formation of National Identity ReviewRaymond Knapp's talent is teasing out the underlying socio-political significance of Broadway musicals. His goal with this book was not to provide a history of musicals or a chronology of what happened when and by whom, but rather to explore the ways musicals respond to and reflect cultural issues and tensions. The book provides many thoughtful insights which emerged from solid research and a sound interpretive stance.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the companion website, which provides audio and some visual examples that greatly enrich the text.
I highly recommend this book as an alternative to so many of the musical theater chronologies out there. The American Musical and the Formation of National Identity Overview

The Oxford Companion to the American Musical: Theatre, Film, and Television (Oxford Companions) ReviewThe Oxford Companion to the American Musical is a surprisingly detailed overview of the the American musicals of Broadway, film and television as witnessed/researched through author Thomas Hischak. The most exciting part of this book is its careful research of the television musical, until now all but glossed over in books on the subject of musical theatre. There was a point in time where television churned out musicals and it is nice to see them get their due. Holiday Specials by Rankin and Bass added much to our song lexicon and it is nice to see them so well represented.
Obviously, the book has its omissions, something that is inevitable when a book has this size and scope. But entries are lovingly chosen and carefully researched and those that are left out are judiciously put aside, or accounted for under other entries. For example: I am a big fan of the musical flop Nick and Nora. N&N does not have it's own entry, but it is mentioned in several other places such us under Joanna Gleason's entry. It is amazing, through cross referencing, just how much author Hischak has accounted for.
One special note: an earlier reviewer of this book makes mention of the musical Destry Rides Again as being named merely "Destry." This is false, as any student of Stanley Greene's Broadway Musicals: Show By Show will tell you. The musical was indeed called Destry Rides Again.
Any true fan of musical theatre will find minor quibbles with any book that may leave out the particular pieces of minutia that fascinate them. However, this book is one of the best of its kind and it is cram packed FULL of wonderful details and oft cast aside information. A must read. The Oxford Companion to the American Musical: Theatre, Film, and Television (Oxford Companions) Overview

Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919: From Greenwich Village Follies to The Toxic Avenger ReviewThis book is entertaining, thorough, and thought-provoking. It has led me to check out several writing teams/individuals that I was unaware or barely aware of before (Elizabeth Swados, Al Carmines, Nancy Ford/Gretchen Cryer, Polly Pen, for starters). There are not really too many books out there specifically about Off-Broadway, so this is really a welcome addition to my bookshelf. And who knew that several of the early SNL writers and actors were in an Off-Broadway musical revue?Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919: From Greenwich Village Follies to The Toxic Avenger Overview
