The Lightning Express ReviewPaul Lally is a prolific writer and knows how to get into the minds of characters. The Lightning Express is a good read and it's right on track with a wild ride and a surprising plot. I have read Lally's other works including Ride The Titanic. What amazes me about all of his novels is his attention to detail and his ability to keep the reader engaged. His characters are complex and perplexing. I highly recommend anything by Paul LallyThe Lightning Express OverviewIt's 1876. The Civil War has been over for ten years.President Grant is in the White House.America is about to celebrate its Centennial Anniversary.God is in the heavens, and all is right with the world. But not with the Jarrett Players, a Shakespearean company facing dwindling audiences at Niblos' Garden Theater in Manhattan. America wants musicals it seems, not the Bard on Broadway. Will Kane, a drummer boy wounded in the Civil War, now works as an assistant to the blustering impresario Henry Jarrett. Will dreams up a publicity stunt for the players to get on a train and race across the United States to San Francisco and put on "Henry V" there. Railroads are still in their infancy, and a transcontinental journey like this would normally take a bone-rattling week. But by using a powerful locomotive and a luxury parlor car making no stops along the way, Will announces they're going to do it in 80 hours. Unheard of! Spectacular! The newspapers love the idea. The railroads too; what a grand way to celebrate the nation's 100th anniversary! The stakes are high, and while many want it to succeed, some are determined to see it fail for reasons that reach far beyond the stage and into the deep shadows of Wall Street robber barons -- and even deeper shadows of the White House. Enroute, Will, and his no-nonsense best friend, photographer Pearl River, have to manage this mob of prima donna actors and actresses, not only from Broadway to San Francisco but then, in a dramatic turn of events based on dark revelations from the Oval office and the New York Central Railroad, Will and Pearl find themselves propelled into the wilds of Montana with "nick of time" crucial evidence for General George Armstrong Custer that could spare his 7th Cavalry -- and Will's brother Sergeant Edgar Kane -- from the disastrous Battle of the Little Big Horn that's about to start. A non-stop ride from start to surprising finish.Want to learn more information about The Lightning Express?
