Common as Muck Roy 'Chubby' Brown: My Autobiography ReviewRoy Chubby Brown is definitely an acquired taste. If you are broad minded and to say the least not easily offended then you will love him. There is no doubt about it the guy is funny. I must say I find some of the expletives in his act a little over the top, but a man who can hold an audience for a couple of hours must know his trade pretty well.
I found his autobiography a mixture of sadness, pain, heartbreak and joy with laughter never far away.. Chubby had an impoverished childhood and had an abusive father. But he eventually rose above all this to find success as a comedian whose brand of humour was fare to risqué for television but nevertheless could always be guaranteed to fill a club or a theatre. Surprisingly with an audience with equally as many women as men.
In between his childhood and his success he had a rough time. By the time he was nineteen `Royston Vasey' had been married divorced, fathered a couple of children. He spent two years in Borstal and served three prison stretches. To top all that, while he was spending time in the merchant navy he was stabbed. It seemed that the only life stretching out ahead of him was a life of crime, laced with prison stretches. Just over a decade later he was one of Britain's funniest comedians playing to audiences all over the country in both clubs and theatres.
Roy then had the heartbreak of finding out that he had cancer and found out that because of where the cancer was, he may never speak again. At first as most people would be he was devastated and very low both mentally and physically. But then he looked back over his life and realised he had suffered a lot worse and at a time when he had no money and no family to support him.
I enjoyed Roy Chubby Brown's book. It does what a good autobiography should do, give you an insight into the man rather than just the personality you see in his stage act. A man who has had the low moments in life and fought his way to the highs and whether you like him or not, you certainly cannot fault him for that.Common as Muck Roy 'Chubby' Brown: My Autobiography Overview
