The Snow Must Go on -a Way, Way Off-Broadway Adventure ReviewISBN 1595301372 - Printed and bound in China (boo hiss to Hallmark for the offshoring of jobs). No age specified. Christmas books for children are awesome and, since there are about 20 stories that get repeated and retold over and over, it's great to find one with a totally new tale.
The penguins and snow people of Antarctic Springs are called by the mayor to a town meeting at moonrise in the town square. That evening, Mayor Flakely reminds them that December is here again and, as always, everyone is thinking of that winter wonderland... the North Pole. The mayor would like to get people thinking about the South Pole for once and the town comes up with a plan. They'll put on a show, showcasing all their talents. After much practice, it's the big night and there's only one question left to answer: if everyone is in the show, who's going to be in the audience? Surprise guests from the North Pole arrive to fill the seats and the show is a great success.
The story isn't one of those destined to be a classic, but it is cute and it is original and, for that, I like it a lot. The text, by author Molly Wigand, is simple enough for young readers and fun and funny enough to get a chuckle or two out of parents, too. Mike Esberg's illustrations are soft, pastel and watercolor-like. There isn't a lot of detail but what is there is fun and fitting. Several jokes are bound to go right over young heads - "Hmm... cruises and icebergs? I'm afraid that's not a good fit." and the re-written lyrics of Elvis's Hound Dog, for example. A cute holiday read.
