Off-Off Broadway: The Second Wave: 1968-1980 ReviewChristopher Olsen's book provides a long-needed historical perspective of Off Off Broadway Theater from 1968 to 1980 - that tumultuous 12 year period of political and social upheaval which also saw the number of small New York theaters rise from 50 to over 300. Based on interviews with the directors, playwrights and actors from the most significant theater groups at the time - including Mabou Mimes, Hudson Guild, Soho Rep, Theater for the New City, Westbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective, Circle Rep, Playwrights Horizon, etc - Mr Olsen describes the excitement and the joy of those "fervent years" when Off Off Broadway was not just a place to present theater, but, as he says, " a community of artists and an extended family."

The book provides not only discussion of each of those theater groups - their members, how they began, how they evolved, but also gives a year by year list of every production.
Under headings such as Collective Theaters; Classical/Revival Theaters, New Work Theaters, Theaters with a Gender Focus; Black and Latino Theater, etc., Mr Olsen charts the growth of Blue Dome, Medicine Show, Mabou Mimes, Theater of the Open Eye, Bond St Coalition, Dove Theater, Courtyard Playhouse, WPA Theater, Theater for the New City, 13th St Rep, NY Theater Strategy, Hudson Guild, Classic Theater, CSC Rep, Shade Company, Jean Cocteau, Drama Committee, Impossible Ragtime Theater, Soho Rep, Time and Space Ltd, Westbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective, Women's Interart, TOSOS, The Glines, Black Theater Alliance, East River Players, Theater Black, Urban Arts Corps, Amas Musical Theater, New Federal Theater, Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, ADAL (INTAR), Repertorio Espanol, Duo Theater, Roundabout Theater, Circle Rep, Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theate, and Manhattan Theater Club.
In addition, Mr Olsen presents a discussion of Off Off's battles with Actors Equity, as well as the consequences of pursuing and receiving grants.
There are also photographs of many memorable people (although for me - not enough) , and a very helpful bibliography and list of sources.
