You Can't Do That on Broadway: A Raisin in the Sun and Other Theatrical Improbabilities ReviewPhillip Rose, the producer of "Raisin in the Sun", "Purlie Victorious" and other Broadway hits has written a very intelligent and entertaining autobiography. The first half of the book centers on his production of Lorraine Hansberry's play "A Raisin in the Sun". It details his efforts to raise the money for such a controversial play, the out of town tryout, the Broadway opening night when it became a hit. He also tells of the backstage squabbles and his cool relationship with Sidney Portier. Above all, he tells of the warm friendship he enjoyed with Ms Hansberry. It is very touching when he describes the angst they endured trying to get her play on its legs. The friendship was ended when her husband took over her life and she died of cancer in 1965.
