Marguerite Clark: America's Darling of Broadway and the Silent Screen ReviewIt's an old book from 1981, but it is well written and definitely worth a look by any silent-movie fan. It is very well researched, and has lots of photos. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that all the photos were sepia-toned instead of crisp black-and-white.
There's not much information on Marguerite's early life, but her Broadway career and of course her silent career are well covered. At the time the book was written, only two of her films were known to exist, so the author could not screen much, but he had seen many of her films when they were originally screened!
Marguerite was really Mary Pickford's only rival during the 1910s, but she had no ambition to be a producer like Pickford. Like Pickford, she was very short and was type-cast in youg girl parts much of the time. After Marguerite got married, she retired from films within a couple of years because she was tired of working and her husband didn't want her working in Hollywood. She did come out of retirement once for an independently-produced film.
She had a very happy 10+ years of married life in New Orleans before her husband (who owned a small arline in the 1920s and 1930s) was killed in a plane crash. She took over as CEO of the airline for about 4 years before she sold it and retired for the second time.
This book contains a filmography, plus photos from many of her stage plays and movies. I can highly recommend this book.
