Israel on Broadway; America: Off-Broadway Jews in the New Millennium ReviewDavid Forman's Israel on Broadway sent me into flights of apoplexy. His book is a sweeping polemic that calls North American Jews to task. He rightfully claims that it is virtually impossible to hold onto one's Judaism as an insignificant minority. But moreso, he blames Diaspora Jews for a lack of will and commitment to invest the necessary time to nuture the Jewish side of their Americanism.
His arguments are compelling, fierce and most often convincing. The anecdotal nature of certain parts of the book add a poignancy to his case. He cites the example of a young girl's response to the issue of interdating (dating a non-Jew): "I could never marry a Moslem because Moslems don't eat pork!" With this rye bit of humor, Forman acutely sums up the dilemma of the Diaspora Jewish world. Everything Jewish has been too readily turned inside out.
By comparison, Forman holds that Israel is the only place where a Jew can live a fully engaged Jewish life, free of assimilation. He holds that the question in Israel is not whether one should remain Jewish, but the manner in which he or she will build a Jewish life. Forman minces no words. Speaking as a prophet of old, he takes the reader on a journey through Israel where he presents Israel with all its accomplishments and failures.
And here is where the worlds of Israel and the Diaspora intersect. Forman urges American Jews to take their liberal tendencies and apply a pluralistic and progressive world view to Israel - not from afar, but from within. He is not afraid to reintroduce the notion of Aliya (immigration to Israel for Jews). Short of that, he encourages Diaspora Jews to engage Israel in an authentic manner in order to increase their weakened Jewish identity.
Forman is clearly the type of person who prefers to give one ulcers than to get them himself. His credentials to write on the topic of Diaspora/Israel relations are impeccable as he serves as the director of Diaspora/Israel programs for the North American Reform Movement for twenty-five years.
Forman's book is simply a must read for Diaspora Jews. In addition to being riveted by the Zionist ideology that is put forth, one can simply enjoy Forman's writing style which is easy, original, humorous and passionate.
As disturbing as parts of his book were, I could not put it down. Israel on Broadway is powerful reading.Israel on Broadway; America: Off-Broadway Jews in the New Millennium Overview
